The Situation in Food Security

"The number of people without enough food to eat on a regular basis remains stubbornly high, at over 800 million, and is not falling significantly. Over 60% of the world's undernourished people live in Asia, and a quarter in Africa. The proportion of people who are hungry, however, is greater in Africa (33%) than Asia (16%). The latest FAO figures indicate that there are 22 countries, 16 of which are in Africa, in which the undernourishment prevalence rate is over 35%."[56]

This is a problem which the world community has been trying to solve since the evolution of the human race. With the latest Horn of Africa famine and food riots breaking out in Eygpt, Indonesia, Cameroon, Peru and most recently Haiti, the global community is faced with a grave problem which requires long term solutions. The problem of food availability has been exacerbated by the recent practices of food speculation, thus introducing artificial increases in prices. With the world population expected to reach 8 billion by 2025 the General Assembly will debate the best course of action to deal with immediate and long term food security and prevent the practice of food speculation.
